Το βορειότερο και δεύτερο μεγαλύτερο
σε έκταση νησί των Κυκλάδων βρίσκεται
νοτιοανατολικά της Εύβοιας, απέχει 36
ναυτικά μίλια από το λιμάνι της Ραφήνας
και λιγότερο από ένα ναυτικό μίλι από
την Τήνο. Πρωτεύουσα είναι η Άνδρος
ή Χώρα και λιμάνι του το Γαύριο.
Σύμφωνα με τον Διόδωρο τον Σικελιώτη,
το όνομα του νησιού προέρχεται από τον
στρατηγό Άνδρο του Ραδάμανθυ, βασιλιά
της Κρήτης.
Η Άνδρος περιβάλλεται από τις
βραχονησίδες Αλαδονήσι, Πρασονήσι,
Λαγονήσι και Μεγάλο Νησί στα δυτικά,
τα επονομαζόμενα Γαυριονήσια, ενώ
στα ανατολικά βρίσκεται η βραχονησίδα
Θεοτόκος. Η σύσταση του υπεδάφους,
σχεδόν αποκλειστικά από κρυσταλλικό
σχιστόλιθο, έχει ευλογήσει το νησί με
ποταμούς, ρέματα, πηγές και κατά
συνέπεια με πλούσια βλάστηση.
Άλλωστε, η αφθονία των νερών της
ήταν αυτή που κατά την αρχαιότητα της
απέδωσε τα προσωνύμια: Υδρούσα,
Λασία, Νωναγρία και Επαγρίς.
The northernmost and second largest island of
the Cyclades is located southeast of Evia, 36
nautical miles from the port of Rafina and less
than a nautical mile from Tinos. The capital is
Andros or Chora and its harbor is Gavrio.
According to Diodorus of Sicily, the name
of the island comes from General Andros
Rhadamanthus, King of Crete. Andros is
surrounded by the islets of Alandonissi,
Prasonissi, Lagonissi and the Megalos Nissos in
the west, collectively called Gavrionissia, and by
Theotokos islet in the east. The composition of
its subsoil, almost exclusively of crystalline slate,
has blessed the island with rivers, streams,
springs and, consequently, rich vegetation.
The abundance of its waters has attributed
the island of Andros with various nicknames,
like Hydroussa, Lassia, Nonagria, and Epagris,
meaning ‘rich in water’ or ‘flora’.
