Το Ηράκλειο είναι η μεγαλύτερη πόλη
και πρωτεύουσα της Κρήτης.
Ταυτόχρονα αποτελεί το τέταρτο μεγα-
λύτερο σε πληθυσμό αστικό κέντρο της
χώρας. Βρίσκεται στη βόρεια ακτή του
νησιού και συνδέεται με τον Πειραιά,
τη Ραφήνα, τη Σαντορίνη, τη Μύκονο,
την Ίο, τη Σητεία, την Κάρπαθο, τη
Ρόδο και άλλες περιοχές.
Χάρη στη σπουδαία γεωγραφική θέση
του στο σταυροδρόμι Ανατολής και
Δύσης, ανέκαθεν υπήρξε χωνευτήρι
πολιτισμών και μήλον τις έριδος για
τους κατακτητές του. Στο διάβα των
αιώνων Ρωμαίοι, Βυζαντινοί, Άραβες,
Ενετοί, Οθωμανοί και Γερμανοί
πέρασαν από τα εδάφη του Ηρακλείου,
αλλάζοντας κάθε φορά και το όνομά
του (Ηράκλειον, Ηράκλεια, Μεγάλο
Κάστρο, Χάνδακα, Candia, Χώρα και
Piazza Kandiye).

Heraklion is the largest city and capital
of Crete. At the same time, it is the fourth
