ΠΛΑΤΕΙΑ ΜΙΑΟΥΛΗ MIAOULI SQUARE
Το σημείο συνάντησης των κατοίκων
στην καρδιά της νησιωτικής πρωτεύου-
σας σφύζει από ζωή. Η πρώην πλατεία
Όθωνος και Λεωτσάκου δημιουργήθηκε
τον 19ο αιώνα (1860-1870) και μαζί με
τη Σπιανάδα της Κέρκυρας είναι μία εκ
των δύο μεγαλύτερων μαρμαρόστρωτων
πλατειών στην Ελλάδα. Ο ανδριάντας του
Ανδρέα Μιαούλη –εξ ου και το νέο της
όνομα–, το Δημαρχείο, το Πνευματικό
Κέντρο, η πλούσια Δημοτική Βιβλιοθήκη
με τα 35.000 βιβλία, το κτήριο του Ιστο-
ρικού Αρχείου, το πρώτο Γυμνάσιο της
ελεύθερης Ελλάδας που «έβγαλε» μαθη-
τές όπως ήταν ο Ελευθέριος Βενιζέλος, ο
Πέτρος Πρωτοπαπαδάκης και ο Ανδρέας
Συγγρός, συνθέτουν τον αρχιτεκτονικό
και συνάμα πολιτισμικό καμβά της πλατεί-
ας Μιαούλη. This meeting point of locals, at the heart
of the island’s capital, is thrumming
with life. Formerly known as Othonos &
Leotsakou, this square was built during
the 19th century (1860-1870) and —along
with Spianada in Corfu— is one of the
largest marble-paved squares in Greece.
The statue of Andreas Miaoulis —hence
the square’s new name—, the Town
Hall, the Hermoupolis Cultural Center,
the extensive Public Library of 35,000
volumes, the Historical Archive Building
and the first High School of the modern
Greek state, boasting graduates such as
the former Prime Ministers Eleftherios
Venizelos and Petros Protopapadakis, as
well as the national benefactor Andreas
Sigros, weave the architectural and
cultural tapestry of Miaouli square.

Το έργο του Γερμανού αρχιτέκτονα Ερνέ-
στου Τσίλλερ είναι ένα από τα μεγαλύτε-
ρα δημαρχιακά μέγαρα στην Ελλάδα. Το
εντυπωσιακό κτήριο που δεν απέχει πολύ
από ανάκτορο ως προς την εμφάνιση,
κοσμεί την πλατεία Μιαούλη από το 1898
(τα θεμέλια είχαν μπει από το 1876).

TOWN HALL
The work of the German architect Ernst
Ziller is one of the largest town halls
in Greece. This impressive edifice, not
particularly different from a royal palace,
graces Miaouli square since 1898, yet the
foundations were already laid in 1876.
