ΚΑΣΤΡΟ ΧΩΡΑΣ
Το Κάστρο του Μάρκου Σανούδου, του
Ενετού ηγεμόνα που ίδρυσε το Δουκάτο
του Αιγαίου το 1207 με έδρα τη Νάξο,
έχει άρωμα Μεσαίωνα. Τα βενετσιάνικα
αρχοντόσπιτα, οι ενετικοί θυρεοί και οι
κρυφές αυλές της παλιάς καστροπολι-
τείας αναλαμβάνουν να σε μεταφέρουν
στο χθες, τότε που το κάστρο είχε την
εποπτεία της θάλασσας και δώδεκα
ψηλούς πύργους. Ως τις μέρες μας
έφτασε μόνο ο Πύργος του Γλέζου, όπου
φιλοξενούνται διάφορες εκθέσεις και οι
συλλογές του Βυζαντινού Μουσείου. Δύο
πύλες, η Τρανή Πόρτα στα βόρεια και το
Παραπόρτι στα νότια, σε εισάγουν στη
μεσαιωνική γειτονιά με τα λαβυρινθώδη
σοκάκια, το Ενετικό Μουσείο στον Πύργο
Della Rocca-Barozzi, τη Σχολή Ουρσουλι-
νών, την παλιά Εμπορική Σχολή που σήμε-
ρα στεγάζει το Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο, τα
εστιατόρια, τις γκαλερί και τα κουκλίστικα
εμπορικά καταστήματα.

NAXOS TOWN CASTLE
The Castle of Mark Sanoudos, the
Venetian ruler who founded the
Duchy of the Aegean in 1207 with its
headquarters in Naxos, has a medieval
scent. The Venetian mansions, coats of
arms and the hidden courtyards of the
old fortress are taking visitors to the
past, when the castle and its twelve
towers supervised the surrounding
area. The Glezos Tower, where various
exhibitions and collections of the
Byzantine Museum are hosted, is the
only one still standing. Trani Porta on
the north and Paraporti on the south
are the two gateways to the medieval
neighborhood with the labyrinthine
alleys, the Venetian Museum (housed
in the Della Rocca-Barozzi Tower),
the Ursuline School, the Old School
of Commerce (which hosts the
Archaeological Museum), restaurants,
galleries and shopping boutiques.
