he best way to experience the landscapes of coastal Georgia is by its
waterways, the interconnected rivers and estuaries that link to the
Atlantic Ocean. Bring your own boat to dock in one of the many
marinas or rent a kayak for the afternoon to explore on your own. Boat ramps
are set throughout the isles, including public access spots on the McKay River
near St. Simons Island, Sidney Lanier Park in Brunswick, and at Fancy Bluff
Creek on Jekyll Island.
Dolphin-watching cruises leave from Jekyll and St. Simons islands, as well
as Brunswick, and allow you to see much more than dolphins. Charter an
offshore fishing excursion or catch your supper from the comfort of the

he Golden Isles’ most iconic species is its sea turtles, the most
common of which is the loggerhead. One of the most memorable
animal encounters is watching hatchlings make their ways from the
shore nests to the ocean. Local loggerheads most commonly lay their eggs
in early summer, with baby turtles hatching 60 days later, typically July through
September. Loggerhead sea turtles are a protected species in Georgia, so be sure
to adhere to the posted signs warning you of nesting areas.
Jekyll Island is easily one of the coast’s best places to learn about sea turtles
as it’s where many come to nest. The Georgia Sea Turtle Center
is Georgia’s only hospital for turtle treatment and rehabilitation, and it features
many exhibits on marine life.
“Jekyll Island is one of the few islands that still has some intact
maritime forest and beaches, so the wildlife on the island is amazing,
from sea turtles to birds to bobcats,” says Dr. Terry Norton, veterinarian
and director of the Georgia Sea Turtle Center.
pier on St. Simons Island. Crabbing is another popular coastal activity — just
be sure to get a fishing license before you go! Bait and tackle shops in
Brunswick, St. Simons Island, and Jekyll Island can set you up with all the
necessary gear.
If you’re looking for something a bit more active, kayak and paddleboard
rentals let visitors combine sightseeing with fitness. Enjoy the calm waters of
the smaller inlets, which are best for beginners to watersports. Rentals and
tours are available from Southeast Adventure Outfitters or Kingfisher
Paddleventures throughout the Golden Isles.
