ON THE WATER T he best way to experience the landscapes of coastal Georgia is by its waterways, the interconnected rivers and estuaries that link to the Atlantic Ocean. Bring your own boat to dock in one of the many marinas or rent a kayak for the afternoon to explore on your own. Boat ramps are set throughout the isles, including public access spots on the McKay River near St. Simons Island, Sidney Lanier Park in Brunswick, and at Fancy Bluff Creek on Jekyll Island. Dolphin-watching cruises leave from Jekyll and St. Simons islands, as well as Brunswick, and allow you to see much more than dolphins. Charter an offshore fishing excursion or catch your supper from the comfort of the 22 he Golden Isles’ most iconic species is its sea turtles, the most common of which is the loggerhead. One of the most memorable animal encounters is watching hatchlings make their ways from the shore nests to the ocean. Local loggerheads most commonly lay their eggs in early summer, with baby turtles hatching 60 days later, typically July through September. Loggerhead sea turtles are a protected species in Georgia, so be sure to adhere to the posted signs warning you of nesting areas. Jekyll Island is easily one of the coast’s best places to learn about sea turtles as it’s where many come to nest. The Georgia Sea Turtle Center is Georgia’s only hospital for turtle treatment and rehabilitation, and it features many exhibits on marine life. “Jekyll Island is one of the few islands that still has some intact maritime forest and beaches, so the wildlife on the island is amazing, from sea turtles to birds to bobcats,” says Dr. Terry Norton, veterinarian and director of the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. pier on St. Simons Island. Bait and tackle shops in Brunswick, St. Simons Island, and Jekyll Island can set you up with all the necessary gear. If you’re looking for something a bit more active, kayak and paddleboard rentals let visitors combine sightseeing with fitness. Enjoy the calm waters of the smaller inlets, which are best for beginners to watersports.
