A Song Well Sung In long ago days before there was
Moore Road Assembly, Durban folk, under Bro John
Bond's ministry, met in the Basement (fondly known as
the Catacombs) of the Durban City Hall.
One Sunday evening around 1957 Bro Bond,
who had an excellent singing voice, planned to render an
item in song. Holding onto his jacket lapels, he took a
step backwards and promptly fell off the reasonably high
dais. We all held our breath. Unfazed, however, Bro Bond got up, dusted himself
off and ascended back onto the dais. With a broad smile he quipped, 'Well, I
hope my song goes down as well as I did!' It did!
Bhengu Terrifies Salisbury Shortly before the Bush War in Southern Rhodesia
Bro Nicholas Bhengu conducted a crusade in what is now Harare. The city was
nervous, but moreso the British South Africa Police who surrounded the large
grounds where a crowd of about 5,000 had gathered to hear
the preacher.
As the tall, dignified Bhengu stood and cried out
'Freedom!' one could hear the BSAP's sten guns being readied.
He raised his arms and the crowds quietened. Again he called
out, 'Freedom!' A ripple of approval arose from the crowd. Now
the BSAP were calling for back-up.
When Bro Bhengu called out 'Freedom!' the third time,
now on the top of his voice, the crowd rose as one and
screamed in unison, 'Freedom, Freedom, Freedom!' The Police
were sweating visibly.
Bro Bhengu raised his hands to silence the crowd. A hush settled, the
people took their seats and he began his address wi Ѡ
