Editor’s Corner Even though I’ve been soc- cer editor writer and covering U.S. soccer for decades every single person pops me the questions like: Do you know about soccer? – How do you know soccer? - They lose their defiant air when I answer that I grew up with soccer, that my father was the owner of two soccer amateur teams in two different occasions. As I remember my childhood I was helping my father run the team, game, players. I’m not sure how much help a child can be but it helped me a lot to like, understand and develop a passion without a forced atten- tion or programming. In my memory bank, the images are: everyone is beautiful and if it’s a human being is family. I never learned to note a difference of color, religion, economic or social status, gender, or where they came from. They all were welcomed in our house, team, field, talking groups. The team was accepted to be made of men only, but the women were giving their two cents of thought and actions everywhere and to everyone in the process. Starting by my mother that co-owned the teams with my father and rightful so because they were not in it for the money, amateur team generates only expenses and head- aches, you can call it the business of “passion”. The field was an official size, goal ball, duration of the game also official. Oh! Yes, amateur is all official. The people around the field practically on top of the field line and believing they’re playing by getting out of way if a play was too close to the line. No one would touch that ball until the referee, also official, whistle it out. Interfere with the play could generate huge commotion and all got involved men, women, and some wannabe adults. These fans were yelling tactics to the players, every single one a serious coach, and bad mouthing a lousy player, praising a good one, cheering a beautiful play and getting nuts with a goal. They all believe they know soccer and act naturally as coach, commentator during and after the game, about the team, players. Their passion is as much suffocating as the player’s, coach, team owner can be. They’re rightful so the play- er # 13. So we, as team-member # 13, media, like you # 13, reader, we know a lot about soccer and we strive to bring you as much information to help you to form your own opinion.
