Community >>> GOAL REP Program Introduces Cardio to Change Desarae Romero, Academic Specialist, Electives Pueblo area GOAL Academy students have the privileged opportunity to refine their individual goals and resolve to make healthy choices, all while getting physical in the gym. The Recovery Education Prevention (REP) program provides students with a way to make the healthy mind/healthy body connection. Students are led through this process by Rob Archuleta, founder of Addict 2 Athlete. A2A is a program designed to help people transition from addiction to a healthy, active and fulfilling lifestyle. Archuleta creates a safe environment for the students to feel comfortable as they mature and grow into young adults. Twice a week students and a few teachers meet at the InZone fitness facility prepared to “get real” and get sweaty. Led by Archuleta, students discuss decision making patterns, personal goals, handling emotions, and addressing the barriers they face in their lives. The space is safe and completely available for students to be open and honest about their personal circumstances. Following this session, students are ready to get sweaty. Without the use of weights and expensive equipment, students learn how to stretch properly and workout their muscles while building cardio. The entire group endures the workout together, sometimes having to depend on each other. Working together is another way for students to build relationships and build trust within those relationships. This skill will be useful to them as they interact in the real world. As GOAL continually strives to create productive and contributing members of society, it is important that students learn the value of the overall health benefits for both the mind and the body. Exceptional programs like this take students away from the traditional four walls of the class room and into the gym.
