Over the years, the race has been run under numerous distances ,originally run over 1600m (8 fl) it then went to 1800m (7fl) in the years between 1900 to 1970 . 1971 through 1979 again saw the race run over a mile (1600m).

The Memsie was run at Flemington for the period between 1941-1944 due to the war effort.

There have been three horses go back to back in the event, Waltzing

Lily (33,34) , Comic Court (49,50) and Sunline (00,01), 2 horses thrice

Eurythmic (20,21,22) and Ajax (38,39,40) and amazingly one horse, Lord, who won four straight. (58,59,60,61)

In modern day times, we have seen some fantastic editions of the Memsie run and won. Crowd favourite Sunline in 2000, 2001. The bonny mare then went and won her 2nd cox plate in 2000, before running 2nd in 2001 after major interference which arguably cost her the race. Makybe Diva won in 2005 before a victory in the W.S.Cox Plate and weeks later securing her third and historic Melbourne Cup victory. So You Think in 2010 beat Whobegotyou on his way to grabbing his 2nd Cox Plate.

The Memsie stakes significantly
