Freedom Festival

As the first large-scale, multi-arts event since Hull was announced as the next UK City of Culture, Freedom Festival will provide audiences with a taste of what can be expected in 2017. Taking place on 5th-7th September, Freedom Festival 2014 will feature performances from NoFit State Circus, the UK’s leading contemporary circus company; cutting-edge theatre courtesy of the festival’s association with Battersea Arts Centre, including Theatre Ad Infinitum’s “theatrical hand grenade” Ballad of the Burning Star and family-friendly marvel The Incredible Book Eating Boy; a partnership with prestigious UK Street Arts Consortium Without Walls and an opening night in celebration of Nelson Mandela, marking the parallels between Mandela’s work and the origins of Freedom Festival in the fight for freedom and equality.

Some of the names for 2014 line-up are: Naturally 7, NoFit State Circus, Roland Gift and Ruby Turner.

Hull Folk Festival is about celebration – a celebration of music, culture, arts, crafts, dancing, real ales, good food and anything else you can give us folk to celebrate. Last year the one of a kind festival proved to be a great success with footfall of approximately 10.000 throughout the two-day event. Crowds enjoyed the free event, which saw over 60 live acts perform across five stages, plus a whole host of fringe activities, including music and history workshops, the KC Family Folk Den, knitting lounge, maypole and traditional Morris dancing.

Over 2000 people saw headline acts on the Main Stage, whilst the local pubs including Ruscadors, Minerva and Green Bricks were packed out across Friday evening and right through Saturday. Fruit Trade Music also hosted a stage, featuring some fantastic up and coming local talent.

Alongside the music, the festival set out to entertain and educate people about the heritage of folk music and culture and give a boost the the city’s fruit market area. Funded by Hull City Council, with the aim of increasing the footfall to that part of the city, the festival certainly transformed the area to a vibrant, rich and cultural space.

The eclectic mix of entertainment catered for at Freedom Festival welcomes a varied audience, experiencing the very best in music, dance, art, street theatre and entertainment from across Europe. Over 60,000 people around the world attend this epic 3 day fesitival.
