Capital of Culture
Hull has been announced as the UK's Capital of Culture for 2017! The city will now deliver a spectacular programme for 2017 that will showcase artistic excellence on a scale never scene before.
This proud honour is due to the many cultural assets in and around the city. Hull has many festivals all year round including the popular Freedom Festival, which attracts more than 150,000 people every year. The festival is a celebration of music, dance, drama & the arts.
As well as these unique celebrations, Hull features a variety of FREE museums to the puplic including: The Street Life Museum, Maritime Museum, Ferens Art Gallery and the Wilberforce Museum. Hull's heritage to the Maritime industry and Abolotion of Slavery is uniquely captured in many different ways throughout the Museum Quarter.
Another must see attraction in Hull is the Hull Marina & Fruit space, which hosts a variety of different music and theatre events from local artists. One such emerging group is the Middle Child Theatre Company which perform contempory theatre.
The highly-anticipated line-up for Hull’s Freedom Festival has been revealed, with international artists, large scale spectacles, a UK exclusive and intimate performances all jostling for space within a packed festival programme of music, art, performance, comedy and much more. Headline acts come from the hotly-tipped Manchester guitar band The 1975, French street theatre pioneers Transe Express, MOBO award winning rap artist Akala, hit comedy trio Pappy’s, writer, poet and broadcaster Lemn Sissay MBE, Edinburgh’s Shooglenifty and many more. The variety of outstanding local and worldwide artists are sure to amaze you and make for another fantastic Freedom Festival 5-7 Sept 2014!
The Hull Truck Theatre presents high quality drama productions. It also tours its productions on a regular basis. Hull Truck was the venue chosen to host the launch of Hull's Larkin 25 Festival in June 2010.
In July 2010 Andrew Smaje was appointed chief executive to develop its programme and to entice new audiences. In September 2012 the company was nominated for The Renee Stepham Award for Best Presentation of Touring Theatre at TMA Theatre Awards. In January 2013 Hull Truck Theatre was nominated for Best Visiting Production at the Manchester Theatre Awards for DNA by Dennis Kelly
