Know how to handle cramps
Overexertion and tiredness can cause your limbs – calves or feet especially, to cramp up. If you do get a leg cramp, do not panic. Shout for help, lie on your back and paddle back to shore.
Don’ t estimate depths
If you are venturing into new waters take your time and walk out. There is the possibility that you may find that it deepens suddenly. Also be sure not to dive into the water not knowing the depth. It may be shallower than it appears, causing you to be injured, possibly even severely.
Be mindful of hidden currents
Watch out for hidden currents to avoid drifting away with the waves- pay close attention to how far you are from the shore can assist with this. If you are not a strong swimmer, be sure that water comes no higher than waist level. That way, if you begin to drift, you will still have some security which will allow you to stand. If you get caught in a rip current- it will pull you out to sea but keep calm, conserve your energy & try to float, then swim back at a 45 degree angle to avoid getting caught again. If you cannot do this then

Check for lifeguards
There are many beaches to choose from, which have lifeguard stations. When choosing your beach spot, check for lifeguard huts and if you do decide to swim at a beach where there is no attendant, be as cautious as possible. Also, if you are alone, be sure that there are other swimmers around. That way if you get into difficulty, someone could be around to assist.
