The Bridgetown Synagogue
( The Nidhe Israel Jewish Museum) Bridgetown
The Nidhe Israel Jewish Synagogue( just 3 – 5 minutes’ walk from the National Heroes gallery) is said to be the first synagogue to be built in the Western Hemisphere. The original synagogue was built in 1654, destroyed by a hurricane in 1834, and then subsequently rebuilt. Today it is managed by the Barbados National Trust.

Built in 1658, St. Nicholas Abbey is one of ONLY three genuine Jacobean mansions in the Western Hemisphere. Barbados is home to two of these mansions, St. Nicholas Abbey and Drax Hall. The Abbeys beautifully landscaped grounds, perfectly preserved buildings and the incredible view atop Cherry Tree Hill are all well worth the drive. Tour the great house, admire the architecture and historical furnishings, view a short very rare 1930s film and hear the former owners’ tale of crime and tragedy. Next explore the fully operational steam mill and rum distillery used to produce St. Nicholas Abbey Rum an enjoyable way to spend the day.
Portvale Sugar Factory, St. James
Barbados produces some of the highest quality cane sugar in the world and the Sir Frank Hutson Sugar Museum highlights this sweet, sweet treasure, showcasing the sugar industry in Barbados through the 1700’ s and 1800’ s. The museum is open year round but visitors to the museum between February to May( the reaping season) can also enjoy a tour of the modern factory and get a better understanding( and sample) of the relationship between sugar, molasses and our world famous rum.

Sunbury Plantation House St Philip
Journey 300 years back to a time in this beautifully restored great house. Sunbury is home to the largest collection of antique horse-drawn carriages in the Caribbean as well as antique furniture, silver, glassware, china, beautifully landscaped grounds and century old machinery. The venue is a Pleasant place for Sunday buffet lunch or an afternoon outing.
