caribbean dreaming
Born and raised on the beautiful island of Grenada , Kay Kelman is a Caribbean artist living in Los Angeles , California .
There she is well on her way to becoming an artist with global appeal . “ I ’ ve always been interested in various forms of art ,” she says , “ but one day I stumbled across a tourist in Grenada painting a scene of the Careenage .” Transfixed , Kelman knew from that moment that art would become an important part of her life . She went on to study at Oral Roberts University for Graphic Design , and completed her BA at Oklahoma State University . Kelman ’ s artwork is distinctive . “ I use oil and 80 % acrylic and try to achieve movement by particular brushstrokes and composition . I tend to use reds , yellows and greens , which are Grenada ’ s national colors .” Blue is also a favored color in her work . Kelman loves “ capturing simple everyday moments ; a look , gesture , movement and immortalize it .” She explains , “ it ’ s the little everyday things that are most memorable .” Having exhibited at the Oklahoma Gallery , Kelman looks forward to exposing more of her art in the Caribbean and the wider world ; she already has an internet following that crosses miles . As an art teacher she offers this advice to upcoming artists , “ keep on doing your thing . Keep creating , because with every new artwork , growth happens . Learn to trust your own voice and unique style regardless of what ’ s trendy , and utilize the internet . The world is just a click away .”
