caribbean dreaming

Born and raised on the beautiful island of Grenada, Kay Kelman is a Caribbean artist living in Los Angeles, California.
There she is well on her way to becoming an artist with global appeal.“ I’ ve always been interested in various forms of art,” she says,“ but one day I stumbled across a tourist in Grenada painting a scene of the Careenage.” Transfixed, Kelman knew from that moment that art would become an important part of her life. She went on to study at Oral Roberts University for Graphic Design, and completed her BA at Oklahoma State University. Kelman’ s artwork is distinctive.“ I use oil and 80 % acrylic and try to achieve movement by particular brushstrokes and composition. I tend to use reds, yellows and greens, which are Grenada’ s national colors.” Blue is also a favored color in her work. Kelman loves“ capturing simple everyday moments; a look, gesture, movement and immortalize it.” She explains,“ it’ s the little everyday things that are most memorable.” Having exhibited at the Oklahoma Gallery, Kelman looks forward to exposing more of her art in the Caribbean and the wider world; she already has an internet following that crosses miles. As an art teacher she offers this advice to upcoming artists,“ keep on doing your thing. Keep creating, because with every new artwork, growth happens. Learn to trust your own voice and unique style regardless of what’ s trendy, and utilize the internet. The world is just a click away.”
