GNDR 3570 Queering (Local) Space + Time | Page 3

Introduction Space, an area in which you occupy. Time, a moment that can last forever. Both of these words have a huge impact on the LGBTQIA+ community, but what does it mean to effectively “queer” both time and space? In the pursuit of an answer and an ability to interpret the intricate, interwoven, and multi-layered meanings to the verb “queering,” an incredible group of individuals curated a zine that is overflowing with passion, talent, and genuine curiosity. From overviewing the history of LGBTQ icons, influential figures, and history-making legislation in Utah to exploring our own personal stories/experiences involving queerness, Zine 2 (Also known as “Salt Lake City is for Lovers”) offers a variety of expertise on what it really means to “queer” in the cis, heteronormative space that is Salt Lake City Utah. Some recurring and central themes of “Salt Lake City is for Lovers” is the authors’ and curators’ interactions with the mainstream LDS culture that flows through the veins of Utah’s 84,899 square miles. To “queer” Utah, specifically Salt Lake City time and space, our content incorporates controversial/radical stances on religious icons, monuments, and leaders. Along with that, our zine curators’ also explored the “queering” or more secular locations, like the “Salt Lake City is for Lovers” sign located in the Gateway Shopping Complex (as seen in our zine cover). Each submission has been crafted with love, and we hope you enjoy them. We also hope that our artistic, graphic, and written content plants a seed to queer your own time and your own spaces.
