St. John’s, Antigua – The Antigua and Barbuda Senior women’s team finished top of
group 1 in the qualifying phase of the inaugural Women’s Caribbean Cup. The Benna
Girls made it 3 wins in 3 matches without conceding a goal from any of the opposition.
Their was high tension at the Antigua Recreation Ground as the faith of moving on
stayed within the hands of girls themselves. Avoiding defeat completely was the best
way of ensuring qualification for the finals in Trinidad.
The first half started off with the home side being more aggressive, while controlling
most of the possession. The ladies from St. Vincent were run over as they pressured
the Antiguan defense with the freighting pace of Kendice Franklyn.
The home side settled nerves in
the 38 minute when Kanica Buckley latched on to a pass from
midfield where she sprinted inside the 18 yard box and calmly
slotted home the winning goal.
The second half proved to be a
mirror of the first, but the Benna
Girls could have made it 2 nil after striker Sherian Bertrand got
free of the Vincy defense but her
shot was saved by the keeper.
holding on to the 1 – 0 victory and completing the group with a 100 percent record.
