6 St. John’s, Antigua – The Antigua and Barbuda Senior women’s team finished top of group 1 in the qualifying phase of the inaugural Women’s Caribbean Cup. The Benna Girls made it 3 wins in 3 matches without conceding a goal from any of the opposition. Their was high tension at the Antigua Recreation Ground as the faith of moving on stayed within the hands of girls themselves. Avoiding defeat completely was the best way of ensuring qualification for the finals in Trinidad. The first half started off with the home side being more aggressive, while controlling most of the possession. The ladies from St. Vincent were run over as they pressured the Antiguan defense with the freighting pace of Kendice Franklyn. The home side settled nerves in the 38 minute when Kanica Buckley latched on to a pass from midfield where she sprinted inside the 18 yard box and calmly slotted home the winning goal. The second half proved to be a mirror of the first, but the Benna Girls could have made it 2 nil after striker Sherian Bertrand got free of the Vincy defense but her shot was saved by the keeper. holding on to the 1 – 0 victory and completing the group with a 100 percent record.
