POLLARDING FLOWERING PEAR TREES

Flowering Pear tree with fireblight and weak branch attachments
Flowering Pears have a tendency to have weak branch attachments due to their unusual growth patterns . At the same time , they can grow heavy , thick canopies , which may result in branch or stem failure during the summer . Pollarding helps to keep the canopy centered along the main stem area , reducing the risk of failure from heavily weighted , over-extended limbs .
Maintaining trees that are closely planted to homes and structures is an ongoing challenge that may require tree pruning for building clearance multiple times a year . Pollarding helps to maintain tree size longer , reducing the cost of needed pruning .

Fireblight is a bacterial disease affecting most flowering pear trees in the Bay Area . The infection occurs during flowering in the spring and later manifests in summer , giving off a darnk brown or black burned appearance .
Benefits
Less risk of limb or stem failure due to overgrown heavy canopies A cost effective way to maintain the size of trees so they do not outgrow the location space where they were planted in Very little fireblight in the first year after pollarding No chemical or cost needed to treat fireblight
