Owner of Young Signs in Gilroy , Richard Young ’ s bright eyes and infectious smile immediately captures your attention ; once you get to know this successful businessman , proud father and accomplished artist , you are happy you did .
Ahnna Goossen , owner of Heart Space Healing Acupuncture and Heart Space Studio in Gilroy , met Young over 13 years ago when she hired him to create signs for her studios . “ I can ’ t say enough about him , he ’ s a joy to work with ,” said Goossen .
Young Signs was established in 1934 by Richard ’ s father , Elmer O . Young , the son of a Chinese farmer who immigrated to Gilroy in 1882 . During his high school years Richard was recruited into the family business . Working alongside his Father he learned three important lessons : be a gentleman , be good to people , and always be loyal to your community .
“ I always remember my dad saying patronize people that patronize you , that ’ s what feeds the town . The Young name has been here in the sign business forever and people keep coming back from generation to generation ,” said Young , showcasing a smile that lights up his face . Doug Buessing is equipment manager at TriCal Inc ., in Hollister , and a longtime customer of Young Signs . “ He ’ s made maybe hundreds of signs for us , twenty just this year ,” said Buessing . “ His work is above top-notch .”
Quality has always been a signature trademark of Young Signs , and customer Dale Krolikowski , head of business development and research for Germains Seed Technology in Gilroy , can testify to that . “ He does a great job in terms of ensuring things will last a long time ,” said Krolikowski . “ Quality is there , colorful quality . He doesn ’ t cut corners .”
Not only did Richard follow in his father ’ s career path , he , like his father , who hand painted movie posters for the Strand theater , is an accomplished artist . ( Continued ...)
