Feature : Fire Preparedness

That is why it ’ s paramount that we are smart and careful . This includes avoiding obvious things like campfires , barbecuing in certain areas , and not setting off fireworks , especially illegal ones . Less obvious things are being careful when using mechanized equipment and not driving with chains , which can potentially generate sparks and start a fire . Good says that yard work like mowing the lawn or using mechanical trimmers shouldn ’ t be done after noon or later . Generally , it ’ s best to start earlier and end earlier , even stopping at ten in the morning for especially hot days . He also recommends making sure your vehicle and trailers are in good shape mechanically and that your tires are in good condition .

In all likelihood there will be fires . When that happens the next best step is to be prepared . This means making sure that your yard and property are clear of dry brush and anything flammable .
Because fires are entirely dependent on location and weather , the best fire departments can advise in the event of an evacuation is to move away from harm and towards safety . Time is of the utmost importance in these situations , and it ’ s much easier to evacuate if you ’ ve already planned and thought things through . If you need to evacuate , Good recommends keeping things light by packing like you ’ re going on a threeday trip . Stick to just the essentials like pet food for your pets , any medications you need , a few changes of clothes , simple toiletries , glasses , and cell phone chargers . Having a first aid kit on hand is also helpful . Although there will always be evacuation centers , you might be more comfortable staying with friends or family , so make a plan for where you will go in case of such an emergency . You also want to make sure that you have up-to-date insurance policies on your home in case the worst happens . Other resources for reporting fires , more info and updates are :
