icki Martin wasn’t looking to purchase
an older home when a realtor friend of
hers insisted that she see a house previously
owned by Maureen and Fred Upton on
prestigious Princevalle Street in Gilroy. When
she saw it, she fell in love with its old world
charm. She purchased this beautiful Spanish
Mission-style home a year and a half ago.
The home was originally built in 1932
and was the first house build on this block of
remarkable homes. Most of the interior and the
clay tile roof are original. Vicky loves history
and antiques, which is evident in the current
décor of the home. It sits on a large 9310 square
foot lot with a pool, cabana, and a garage with
alley access. The home itself is 2613 square feet,
two-stories plus a basement.
As you enter the front door, you quickly
realize the homeowner and the house are
a good combination. Vickie has populated
this home with a remarkable collection of
antiques, art deco pieces, furnishings and art
that complement the unique architecture. The
house has plaster barrel ceilings, arched door-
ways, period light fixtures, multiple built-ins,
and well-maintained moldings. Most rooms are
painted white which further complements the
beautiful furnishings.
The living room just off the entrance has
an original fireplace with unique glazed tiles
and an open-barrel ceiling. The furnishings
and the architecture of this spacious room
transport the guest into another time and space.
It is contemporary and historical at the same
time, yet it also communicates a peaceful,
relaxed vibe.
Across from the living room is a well-
balanced dining room. A swinging door heads
into the kitchen, which was renovated by the
previous owners. The open kitchen features
custom wood cabinetry and a hammered nickel
sink in the island. A stained glass addition to
the former laundry room serves as the pantry.
