THE NAKASENDO WAY A Walk through Japan’s Remarkable History Walking the Nakasendo Way is rated moderately strenuous. It is entirely doable for anyone in good condition. Our group ranged in age from 65 to 78. The topography is rolling hills, gradually rising to a final elevation of 4,000 feet. A day’s walk can be 5-10 miles, modified by the guide to suit the group. If anyone becomes over-exerted, a taxi “miraculously” appears and transports them to the night’s lodging.
