Spotlight on 2018 MHUSD Grads

By Kimberly Beare , Public Information Officer , Morgan Hill Unified School District

HHigh school graduation is a major milestone for our students and an emotional moment for the school district staff . Most of our graduates have been with us since Kindergarten and they ’ ll soon be heading off to some of the best schools in the country . As sad as we are to see them go , we are also brimming with pride at their accomplishments . It ’ s an exciting time as they begin their journey to college , the workforce , or military service . Here is a small sample of where our students are headed .

Cera Huffman ( graduate of Live Oak High School ) is headed to Baltimore , Maryland to study Biological and Behavioral Sciences at John Hopkins University . Her long-term plan is to pursue medical school and become a neurosurgeon . Cera said she chose John Hopkins because of its prestige as a medical school , and its smaller size , with roughly 6,000 undergraduates . Asked what she liked best about Live Oak , she said , “ The wide range of Advanced Placement classes as well as the helpful and supportive teachers and staff .”
Kyra Fisher ( Live Oak graduate ) is attending UCLA to study human biology . Her long-term goals include medical school and a career as either a pediatric endocrinologist or a plastic surgeon for burn victims and deformities . In Kyra ’ s experience at Live Oak , “ The teachers really care about you and your education . Some of my teachers really inspired me to learn and truly put the effort in to get to know me and that made a huge difference for me in high school .”

Amanda Jackson ( graduate of Ann Sobrato High School ) has been accepted at UC Berkeley where she plans to study Electrical Engineering and Computer Science . She sees it as a stepping stone to graduate school and a Master ’ s Degree in Electrical Engineering . Her goal is a career in the field of sustainable energy . Amanda described the teachers at Sobrato as “ genuinely passionate about the subjects that they teach ” and added that “ their enthusiasm made classes much more interesting and inspired me to embrace learning .”
Tai Nguyen ( Sobrato High School Class Valedictorian ) will enter the University of Southern California this fall to study pre-medicine . After college , Tai said he plans to serve in the Air Force Special Forces Para-rescue “ and then go to med school to pursue my career in neurosurgery .” In Tai ’ s view , the faculty and students at Sobrato “ are like my second family . I would literally die for these people because if it weren ’ t for them I wouldn ’ t be here . Sobrato is a small school with a big heart .”
Raymond Bui , ( Sobrato graduate ) is headed to UCLA to pursue a double major in Neuroscience and either Business or Psychology , after which he may apply to medical school . He chose UCLA because of its “ reputation as one of the best public universities in California and a consistent toplevel performer in D1 athletics ” and is excited to experience all that Southern California has to offer . Reflecting on his years at Sobrato , he said , “ The absolute best thing about Sobrato is the cohesive interactions between the upper and lower grades that form a bond within the student body in a way that eliminates any form of hierarchy . There is a culture at Sobrato that is both welcoming and fun .”
Our deepest wish , for all Class of 2018 graduates across the school district , is success and happiness in school , in their careers , and in life .
