AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2018 gmhtoday.com G ilroy residents will be glad to know the First Street (State Highway 152) Sewer and Water Line Improvements Project is set to begin. The historic thoroughfare will be revamped both above and below the surface beginning this summer and finishing next year. As part of an ongoing effort to improve its infrastruc- ture, the City of Gilroy has initiated the sewer and water line rehabilitation work. This is a priority project that will extend the life of the sewer system and increase water util- ity along First Street. Despite the road running through the city, First Street is not a city-owned road as it falls under the jurisdiction of Caltrans as part of State Highway 152. Gilroy city officials are excited about moving forward on these projects and working with Caltrans on the road resurfacing. The improvements include rehabilitation of the aging sewer, including 11 manholes, the construction of new water mains, valves, fire service laterals and fire hydrants. Since this entails roadway construction on sections of First Street, it’s necessary to complete this vital infrastructure repair before Caltrans begins its paving work After the completion of this work, Caltrans will proceed with the Pavement Improvement Project along First Street, from west of Santa Teresa Boulevard to Route 101. “The City is committed to completing this work quick- ly, ef ficiently and safely. Your patience and understanding is appreciated. We look forward to sharing information with our residents and business community as the proj- ect progresses,” said Girum Awoke, City of Gilroy Public Works Director.
