Carrington
Power Station
The competition to find a name for our online magazine has been
won by Tony Ely who is a GMB member working for Liverpool City
Council. Tony suggested 'GMB Connect' which impressed our
regional committee who chose the name after considering dozens
of entries.
GMB Organiser, Albie McGuigan recently attended
the official opening of Carrington Power Station, along
with our branch secretary and site convenor Steve
Butterworth.
The 884mw Station took nearly three years to build at a cost of £710 million, providing jobs for nearly
5,000 people involved in the project from planning to commissioning, including approximately 2,000
engineering construction workers at various stages.
Tony wins a tablet for his suggestion.
On behalf of our regional committee and our region we extend our
thanks to everyone who took part and congratulate Tony on his
winning entry.
Tony will be presented with his prize at the next regional committee
meeting.
There were 4.8 million man hours worked with excellent safety statistics for which the site gained the
gold award for safety from the national joint council. At its peak the project was approximately 70%
local labour (within a 35 mile radius) with hundreds of GMB members employed in the boilermakers and
insulators sectors with hundreds more in support services.
The workers donated monthly collections to Partington food banks and local charities that exceeded
£20,000. This initiative was developed by our members and matched by client donations to benefit the
local community.

Pat Dockerty, the CEO of the client company ESB, an 85% Irish government financed company,
praised the local workforce in numerous interviews with local and national press outlets. His view of the
Carrington success is that it should be repeated at all four of their UK projects.
Steve Butterworth was the site convenor from start to finish, managing all of the union stewards and
members to help deliver the project.
Albie McGuigan paid tribute to the efforts of GMB members and all others involved saying:
“With all the challenges that Steve and our members had to face I believe our region should be proud
of their achievements. They delivered a major project on time and within budget without any major
procedural issues and no lost time, which is almost unique in the construction industry and obviously
a major achievement for the recognition of our members and the national agreement for engineering
construction”.
The project has been declared a huge success in terms of engineering
construction, providing electricity to around 1 million homes and businesses, as
well as from an employment and industrial relations perspective.
