WORKERS ’ RIGHTS There are plenty of ways to get involved this year .

Events across the Region highlight International Workers ’ Memorial Day

O n 28 April , GMB North West and Irish Region held a variety of events across the area to commemorate International

Workers ’ Memorial Day .
At the regional offices in Liverpool and Manchester , wreaths were laid by Dougie Henry and Alf Jones , in remembrance of all those workers who died or were seriously injured in the workplace .
In 2015 , the number of fatal injuries at work in the UK was 142 . These figures exclude road
THIS YEAR ’ S THEME Strong laws , strong enforcement and strong unions .

“ Remember the dead and fight for the living .” traffic accidents , workers travelling by air or sea , armed forces and also suicide – so realistically , this figure is a lot higher . The theme for International Workers ’ Memorial Day 2016 is ‘ Strong Laws – Strong Enforcement – Strong Unions ’ because across the world unions are seeing growing attacks on important health and safety legislation .

Unionised workplaces are safer – yet the UK government is trying to stop unions from protecting the health and safety of their members by restricting the rights of health and safety representatives .
Regional Secretary Paul McCarthy said : “ Over the last five years , the government has driven down the budget for the Health and Safety Executive , removing protection from millions of self-employed workers . GMB North West and Irish Region is proud of the work done by our army of workplace safety representatives and will continue to support the annual events in the Region to remember the dead and fight for the living .”
