GLUTEN FREE awareness magazine March 2019 | Page 3

Welcome to the GLUTEN FREE awareness magazine, where we celebrate Coeliac Awareness Week (13-20 March) and our campaign for 2019 #treatglutenseriously. Coeliac Awareness Week is one of our biggest annual events and this year our national Treat Gluten Seriously campaign aims to educate and raise awareness of best practice principles for gluten free food service. A Coeliac Australia eating out survey* of almost 2,500 people with coeliac disease, revealed the biggest concern for most is finding food businesses that know how to provide genuine gluten free options. For people with coeliac disease, and others following a strict gluten free diet, the risk of inadvertent consumption is often a concern and minimising this does require ongoing awareness. It is incredible to think that 75% of people with coeliac disease want to avoid eating out in social situations and that 90% worry about falling ill due to gluten exposure. I am new to Coeliac Australia and one of my main motivations for joining the organisation was to assist with dramatically improving the diagnosis rate for people with coeliac disease. I am greatly concerned about the number of Australians affected by coeliac disease that remain undiagnosed, so it is in this important area I would really like to help make a difference. We want to continue to raise awareness and hope you find this magazine interesting and informative. 5 9 10 18 34 Oats and the gluten free diet Join our community Awareness Endorsement Food service Cover image: Courtesy of Helen, Hungry & Fussy, Blackberry yoghurt cake recipe.
