Cuba
T
he Caribbean’s most
fascinating country: a
heady mix of faded
Spanish colonial cities,
sputtering Fifties Cadillacs,
wonderful live music, world-
class cigars and an arcane
communist system. Stay-put
beach packages are still the
most popular, and many of
the beaches are fantastic,
including at Varadero, the
biggest resort.
However, with so much else
to enjoy in Cuba, you may
regret holing up in an all-
inclusive hotel for your whole
trip. Holiday options include
sultry Havana (lots of cultural
offerings and great nightlife),
the beautiful tobacco
heartlands of Viñales, the
crumbling colonial town of
Trinidad, and sights related
to Che Guevara and the
revolution are just some of
the other highlights the island
has to offer.
Cuba can also offer you
such diversity as cycling
holidays, horse riding, bird
watching, golf, scuba
diving, trekking, jazz festivals,
carnivals, and of course it is
the home of salsa dancing
(though this was something
I didn’t get to try, but I am
told is very good!). Who
would have thought the
country has so much to offer,
it’s just really trying to choose
which is going to be your
next holiday.
Excursion:
Take a guided tour of
Havana but not in your
normal tour coach… try it in
a classic fifties car.
Interesting Fact
Cuba has been producing
fine coffee for over two
centuries, with a flavour to
match the excitement and
passion of its people.
Top Tip
I could say you must have
a mojito whilst you are in
Havana, or go to the famous
Tropicana club for an evening
show, or take in an excursion
to the Bay of Pigs. But really
it would be go and visit for
yourselves and then come
back and give me your top
tips, and between us we
might even convince my
brother to go!
Recommendation
Make your trip a combination
of Havana,Viñales and Trinidad
with your beach stay, this will
showcase you the island and
for something different try a
night of your stay in a Casa
(local family run B&B).
