Thailand
O
ne of my favourite
holiday destinations
is Thailand, known as
the ‘Land of Smiles’ and when
you visit you will see why.
The options available for
holidays in Thailand are
endless. The country offers a
variety of experiences, from
the dynamic city of Bangkok,
jungle trekking in Chiang
Mai, magnificent long white
beaches in Phuket and not
forgetting the tropical island
retreats of Koh Samui and
Koh Phi Phi. It has something
for everyone.
I chose a twin centre
combining Bangkok and
the charming coastal town
of Hua Hin just a 2.5 hour
road transfer away from
the city. Ideal if you have a
shorter holiday and want to
see more.
My highlight in Bangkok had
to be the private river cruise.
We went on down the Chao
Phraya River to the iconic
Grand Palace. This allows
you to relax and see another
side of Bangkok from the
water and saves sitting in
the busy traffic... although I
wasn’t too relaxed when the
guide pointed out a Komodo
dragon in the water! After a
couple of nights in Bangkok
we moved on to Hua Hin,
known for being the area
where the city meets the
beach. I enjoyed the local
night markets watching all
of the food being prepared
freshly in front of you and of
course sampling some of the
local delicacies. It was really
nice after being in the city to
relax by the beach.
Interesting Fact
Bangkok’s full name is actually
Krung Thep Mahanakhon
Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara
Ayuthaya Mahadilok Phop
Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom
Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan
Amon Piman Awatan Sathit
Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit.
Top Tip
Stay in three or even four places
if time allows for the best way to
get a feel of the country.
Recommendation
Sample drinks in one of
Bangkok’s roof top bars. One
in particular called Vertigo
on the 61 st floor of the Banyan
Tree hotel offers 360 degree
views of the city. You literally sit
under the stars. What surprises
people is to walk out on a
rooftop bar with absolutely
nothing above you. The
designers have successfully
eliminated anything that
could block your vision.
