Shimmy Technologies with New Project ‘Shimmy Upskill’ Primark Partners with Unicef
USA: Shimmy Technologies has
now taken a step ahead to support the
sector with a new project ‘Shimmy Upskill’.
The pilot project aims to find out the
answers as to how a garment workers’ jobs
can be saved with multifold automation
taking place in the apparel industry.
The company consludes retraining
workers and helping them learn new skills
is the only way to save their jobs. With
the tagline ‘Empowering garment workers
through play’, the project’s objective is to
create a learning environment with the
help of video games to upskill digitally
illiterate garment workers as sewing
automation is about to replace the labour.
The project is being piloted in
factories in Bangladesh and Indonesia in
Phase I. Phase II will include New York
city. Dominated by women workforce,
apparel industry is facing intense pressure
of reduced process and faster deliveries.
The only way to achieve this is
by adoption of technologies like digital
patterns and 3D virtual prototyping.
New sewing robots have also been
introduced in the market which may
drastically reduce the number of workers
needed for mass production of clothing.
The project team is comprised of
New York Fashion Tech Lab apparel brand
partners, Softwear Automation, Gerber
Technologies, Carnegie Mellon, CAD
education experts, and NGOs advocating
for workers’ safety and well being.
Praxair Signs Long-
M&S to sack 351 more workers Term Agreement
USA: Marks & Spencer (M&S) has
announced to cut more than 300 jobs
majorly related to store management roles.
However, the latest job cut is not related to
its plan to shut 100 stores in the country
by 2022. The company said that the store
closures are part of its transformation plan
to modernise its UK store estate and better
meet the changing needs of customers.
The move is aimed to make savings
in a brutally competitive market as the
retailer witnessed decline in profit in two
consecutive years and third (2018-19) is
also expected to be unafavourable for the
company. The report has claimed that 351
people would lose their job after the new
development which has been described
as tough and but necessary in order to
ensure that its stores support the future of
the business and provide the best service
to its customers.
Mumbai: Praxair, Inc. had announced
it has signed a long-term agreement to
supply oxygen to U.S. Methanol LLC’s
new facility in Institute, West Virginia. The
customer’s facility will produce methanol
for use in the production of plastics,
varnishes, medicines, adhesives and
textiles. Praxair will build a vacuum
pressure swing adsorption (VPSA) plant
that is expected to start up in 2019. U.S.
Methanol’s West Virginia facility will be a
major regional manufacturer benefiting
from the abundance of gas in the Marcellus
and Utica shale fields. The low cost
of producing natural gas and related
byproducts is expected to expand the
chemical industry in the area. The company
selected the site because of its access to
extensive water, rail and highway systems
and low cost raw materials.
