Lone Wolf Terrorism in Legislation : A Legal Overview

Abstract
Despite the frenzy of U . S . legislative activity addressing terrorism since the attacks of 9 / 11 , laws specifically addressing lone wolf terrorism are still sporadic and inconsistent . This essay provides a legal overview of existing terrorism laws as they relate to political or religiously inspired violence conducted by an individual unaffiliated with an existing terrorist organization . It starts with a brief discussion on lone wolf terrorism followed by an examination of the history of terrorism laws . The body of the essay examines laws relating to lone wolf terrorism , dividing them into pre-9 / 11 and post-9 / 11 . The article concludes with some recommendations as to why explicitly addressing lone wolf terrorism in U . S . legislation is essential for policymakers and academics .
