top TEN
ATTRIBUTES
1) Approachable
As a Rugby Coach, it is our job to be on form, to
educate, to enthuse and build a team and club
environment around us. How our subjects perceive
us makes all the difference so we need to make sure
we portray the right coaching attributes and qualities.
But which ones are most important? To follow are ten
coaching attributes we need to actively practise in
order to get the most out of our rugby coaching.
It’s the truth, a rugby coach who is
approachable already has a head start
on all the rest. Think of the last time you
watched a Hollywood sporting movie
where the Head Coach is known for
being a tough nut, screams his head off
and gets in the grill of his players. Is this
a coaching attribute we want to portray?
Most likely the answer is no. Yes, there
are going to be times where the temper
flares, but maintaining composure and
ensuring your players, and parents for
that matter, can still approach you. Check
that temper, don’t be a screamer.
2) Knowledgable
Having a rugby coach who knows what
he or she is on about makes all the
difference. Providing new drills, fresh
ideas and patterns means the world to
the players. You would have no doubt
been in the position before when you
go through the same drills and games
at trainings over and over again, and
what sort of effect does this have?
Boredom, disengagement and disinterest
is the answer. Being knowledgeable is a
great coaching attribute, and if you are
currently not a knowledgeable coach,
