THINKING INSIDE THE BOX
Building innovation from the inside out
ATCO Structures & Logistics pioneered the modular construction
industry in Canada in 1947. At the outset of the country’s first oil
boom, oilfield workers slept in tents and braved the elements and
wildlife as best they could. The Leduc oil discovery ushered in
Canada’s modern age of resource development and Canada gained
a seat at the table along with the world’s leading economies.
continue to lead the industry with innovative solutions that support
resource companies, governments and the construction industry
worldwide. Our workforce housing solutions have evolved in a way
never imagined in 1947.
On the heels of those developments came an innovative business
strategy. Combining their savings, father S.D. and son R.D. Southern
founded Alberta Trailer Hire with 15 utility trailers that were rented
out to oilfield clients as a much safer and warmer alternative to
the tents. Manufacturing came next, with the first units built by
the founders in their garage. In order to supply to growing demand,
manufacturing expanded rapidly.
Alberta Trailer Hire started in a relatively niche market, and is today
known as ATCO Structures & Logistics, with modular manufacturing
facilities in Canada, the United States and Australia, 40 sales
offices worldwide and operations on five continents. It is part of
the ATCO Group of Companies with more than 9,800 employees and
approximately $16 billion in assets delivering service excellence
and innovative business solutions worldwide, with leading
companies engaged in Structures & Logistics, Utilities, Energy and
Technologies.
Headquartered in Calgary, the company is synonymous with
workforce housing and worksite infrastructure. The iconic yellow
band on modular units can be seen in Alberta’s oilfields, the Eastern
Arctic and the Australian Outback, to name a few. Over the last 67
years, ATCO’s units have served clients in more than 100 countries.
Truly a key player in the industry, ATCO Structures & Logistics provides
complete worksite solutions, bundling modular accommodations,
services such as catering and housekeeping and site services. We
Today, once again, ATCO raises the bar and pushes the industry
forward with finishings and details worthy of a show home. The
eye-catching yellow still remains, narrowed down to a refined
stripe. The same durable box on the outside is now sleek, spacious
and high-end within, featuring elegant colour palettes and fine
finishes that include new vanities, light fixtures and countertop
materials. The flooring deserves a special mention. To call it ‘carpet’
would be a great injustice, because this nearly magical material is
a composite textile that is incredibly durable, stain-repellent, traps
airborne allergens and irritants and has a major impact on noise
suppression. It is also as recyclable as a soda can.
To rejuvenate the familiar space that has served many for 67
years, our designer’s critical eyes found room for a lounge chair,
walk-in closet, full-sized shower and a double bed. And that’s
just the bedroom. Common spaces showcased at the ATCO
Structures & Logistics GPS exhibit include functional and aesthetic
modernizations embedded around workforce accommodations.
We’d like to invite you to come take a swing at the golf simulator,
shout out in the quiet room to test upgraded noise isolation, have
a drink in the bar and host a meeting in our modular boardroom
with self-frosting glass. Let the backlight signs guide you to a new
generation of workforce housing. Even in the most remote corners
of the world and demanding environments, the ATCO camp has
become the ATCO lodge. Welcome.
