Software Defined Networking (SDN) separates control plane and data plane of the networking system so as to
control the flow of data packets from a centralized software. Data plane consists of all those hardware that are
included in the network such as routers, switches, bridges, etc. Control plane manages the packets which are to
be sent according to the priority. There is one more layer called as application layer, which directs specific
functions through the controller software, that includes program for networking monitoring, intrusion detection
systems, etc.
Network functions virtualization (NFV) is a technology which decouples the network functions, such as

firewalling, network address translation (NAT), intrusion detection, domain name service (DNS), etc., from
proprietary hardware appliances so that they can run in software. It consolidates and delivers the networking
components needed to support a fully virtualized infrastructure which includes virtual servers, storage, and
other networks.

The software-defined wide area network (SD-WAN) is a specific application of software-defined networking
(SDN) technology applied to wide area network connections, which are used to connect enterprise networks
including branch offices and data centres over large geographic distances.
