➢
Mobile/portable printers came into existence in 1984 and were introduced by Hewlett-Packard (HP), an American
multinational information technology company headquartered in Palo Alto, California. Printers were introduced to
eventually reduce traditional typing system and overtook paperwork with an ease.
➢
Portable printers, as the name suggest, can be easily carried or wheeled according to the user’s requirement.
Unlike other larger desk-bound printers, they have an inbuilt battery to carry out functions, and handles or straps
for easy holding. Generally, these printers have slow processing speed and hold small paper or label capacity.
➢
On the basis of technology used in printing, printers are mainly classified into three categories, namely, Impact,
Inkjet and Thermal.
➢
Impact printers work on the mechanism of banging a head or needle against an ink ribbon to make a mark on the
paper. Impact printers include dot-matrix, daisy wheel and line printers.
➢
Inkjet printers create a digital image of the input data by propelling ink onto a paper, plastic or any other
substrate. They are most commonly used printers ranging f rom small inexpensive consumer models to expensive
professional machines.
➢
Thermal printers are digital printers w hich use the mechanism of selectively heating a thermochromics paper and
pressing it over a thermal print head. They are used majorly in POS systems, ECG monitors, print on demand
labels, etc.
