ONBASHIRA
The shrines that host the Onbashira ("The
Honored Pillars") are two different locations.
CHINO-SHI
The Lower Shrine (Shimosha) is located in the
mythical town of Shimo-Suwa, found amongst a
kingdom of mountains . Shimo-Suwa is one of
Japan's hidden gems because it is overflowing
with history from shrines, steaming hot springs
and the infamous 'bleeding' Manji no
Sekibutsu, otherwise known as the “Rock
Buddha”. The Onsens (volcanic hot springs) here
are housed in either traditional or brutalist
concrete architecture yet still harness the peace
that comes with most things Japanese. The town
has super markets down the street from traditional
tatami homes and even more traditional locals. If
you can spend time here, take in the spiritual aura
and give yourself, even just for a moment, time to
settle, relax and appreciate all things Japanese.
SHIMO-SUWA
The Upper Shrine (Kamisha) is located in Chino,
which is barely south of Kami-Suwa, exactly one
stop south from the Kami-Suwa Station on the rail
system.
This city known for its traditional and modern
architectural blend as the lifestyle of the city
continues to evolve into the modern age. This blend
extends further than architecture and can be seen
as traditional rice fields and tea ceremonies play
significant roles even today. Chino is home to the
Dogū,which are late Jōmon period clay figures,
along with abounding natural wonders and
intriguing wildlife. And to top it all off, they also have
some mean slopes for skiing.
