Getting around Transportation options in India are plenty. India is a massive country with a lot to do and even more to see. When going, start with the mindset that you will not be able to see everything. Be realistic about what you want, choose a region (north, central or south) plan your way around, then explore. The least expensive ways to travel are by bus, train or Tuk Tuk (rickshaw), depending on the distance needed. Domestic flights in India are abundant and fairly priced, so if the distance warrants it we suggest getting on that plane. Vital tip: when traveling by Tuk Tuk never say yes to the first price the driver quotes. Cut it by at least 1/2 and don’t go any higher. Even 1/2 of the quoted price will most likely be too much to pay, but there is no way as a tourist you will get the local price, and that is okay. You aren’t a local. Mistakes we made +Went from Delhi to Pushkar by Taxi. Never do that. That’s dumb. It’s a trap. People will cheat you, there are no meters. Never take a taxi in India; it isn’t New York. + Got trapped in a fake “Information Office” scheme. These are run by the Indian mafia or a band of brothers and they cheat, cheat, cheat you for all that they can. + If an Information Office tells you that all trains or hotels are fully booked due to some “event” (aka Holi). Double check those people. Go to another place. This usually happens in bigger cities. + When going to a different Information Office, also get a new driver. The taxi, tuk-tuk or whoever took you to the “information office” is in on the shenanigan and is for sure getting a tip out. + If it’s cheaper to fly to your destination than it is to go through this “Information Office” they are lying to you, and you should not trust it. 30
