As we ’ ve seen with each of the animals in this capsule , deforestation , habitat loss and fragmentation are the leading causes of distress for Argentina ’ s wildlife . If we take a close look at the forces driving the degradation and loss of ecosystems , we find that many of us with good intentions are part of the problem . How ? Plant-based alternatives to dairy and meat that are based on soy beans , such as soy milk and tofu , have skyrocketed in popularity and thus , demand , over the last 30 years . On top , soybean meal , an animal feed product , accounts for 65 % of the world ’ s protein feed that is used for raising livestock for meat production . Since 1995 , Argentina has become one of the largest producers of soybeans , increasing their output by 216 %. The soy plant became popular because it releases nitrogen into the soil , which makes it well suited to crop rotation , and markets have been growing , especially China .
