NEAR THREATENED

BUSH DOG

Perro del monte in Spanish , bush dogs live as far north as Panama ( Central America ), but mostly reside in South America , east of the Andes . Of the three sub-species of bush dog , speothos venaticus wingei makes its home in southern Brazil and Paraguay , and the extreme north-eastern region of Argentina . Normally found at lower elevation than spectacled bears , sometimes bush dogs spend time high up in montane forests . These social canids tend to spend time in packs , and are known to tolerate a broad range of habitat , from wet savannas to dry Pampas . Growing up to 75 centimetres long ( 30 inches ), and 30 centimetres ( 12 inches ) at the shoulder , the bush dog ’ s small features - legs , snout , ears , tails - make it well suited to crawling into and sleeping in the burrows giant armadillos build . When hunting , these carnivores use pack tactics to catch large rodents , but sometimes are as bold as to take on tapir ( related to pigs ) as large as 250 kilograms ( 550 pounds )!
