Summary

This study demostrates how research has impacted gender and education policies in South Korea. Policy suggestions have been made to guide the future of educational opportuntiies for female students. Many of the educational policies in place have systemic and systematic issues that need to be addressed. This report offers suggestions and recommendations to influence changes to existing policies or the development of future policies regarding gender equality in education.

The research problem is to identify policies that impact gender and education issues. Analysis of these policies considered the role of researcher and government official so that the recommendations could be articulated in such a way that influenced policy change. The importance of this study is such that policies have been identified that negatively affect females in educational opportunties. Policy makers need understand the implications of existing policies on the education of females in South Korea.

Researchers conducted a literature review to analyze the contributions of the exisiting policies to gendr inequities. In addition, interviews were conducted to gain insight on policy development strattegies. And finally, an advisory committee was developed to identify strategies for impacting future policy development.

The findings are significant and not surprising. The key areas that emerged for policy changes included curricula support and environmental changes in the areas of vocational education for females, teacher development, and adult education for women. The study suggested policy changes that supported a more equitable educational content and gender consciousness in teacher training programs. Sexual discriminatory textsbooks and curriculum materials also was identified as an area for improvement and policy changes.

Critique

The researchers suggested that all stakeholders responsible for policy development need to be a part of the process for change. Linking research to government policies is an advantage of a cooperative process that emphasizes equality for all. Researchers suggest that a collaborative process in development and reviewing edcuational policies, practices, procedures, and structures is necessary for gender equity. They also recommend an establishment of an institutional environment that encourages and demands interest in women's education and studies.
