V I E W | W E L C O M E M E S S A G E ] With global presence, comes global responsibility I t’s moments like this I really wish we were all still using old-fashioned type-writ- ers. If we were, I’d have been able to dramatically tear my old editor’s letter from the machine and scrunch it in frustration before launching it into the trash with other discarded papers. Instead I’m just proverbially scrapping my previously-finished editor’s letter with a right click and delete - which I feel really lacks theatrical effect - but you get the idea, I’ve had to start over. Written at the start of March, my now superfluous note had spoken of all the exciting things we had to look forward to in 2020, a follow-on from a champagne year of Global Custodian marking its 30th anniversary with celebrations and special events. I highlight- ed the excitement we had in launching our new ETF administration survey, fund domicile report and multimedia initiatives (all which are still going ahead by the way). But this was before the Coronavirus pandemic swept the world. I’ve always marvelled at how Global Custodian’s magazine recipients hail from 128 dif- ferent countries around the world. It gives me great pride to know that our work is being read on that kind of scale and that we have such a reach. As the world joins together in a rare show of unity in the fight against the virus, it re- minds you how much of a rarity it is for something to bind us all, and makes you feel lucky to work in a sector that’s global by nature and has a deep-rooted universal connection. At its core, the securities services industry is interlinked through global networks. Custodians, in particular, rely on connections from all corners of the world to help them best serve their clients, creating a web of networks and relationships that often start as business deals before often turning into a personal camaraderie, or vice-versa. We attend conferences such as Sibos which moves from continent to continent to the home of a range of organisations with each passing year. We adhere to global standards, regulations and are members of worldwide associations. The global nature of the business might seem like a necessity, but in times like this you can also step back and consider it a privilege. Countries may have closed their borders, but we’ve still been able to learn from each other during this period, share in our respective isolation stories and even have a laugh at videos of Italians playing tennis across from each other’s flats – YouTube it if you haven’t seen it. Zoom, Teams and Skype are keeping us connected in place of networking events and I’m increasingly finding we’re getting to know more about each other than ever be- fore as we share personal anecdotes along with business updates. No matter where you are in the world, please don’t hesitate to get in touch if there’s anything we can help with. If you’ve got some thoughts you want to share then we will publish your views. We’ll be flexible on survey deadlines where possible and we can distribute content to you in a number of formats. If you want to give your team a wider access to our website then we can work with you on a plan either in the interim or long- term, and finally we are making a digital version of this edition free-to-read to our entire audience as a one-off to start the year. Use us as a forum, a sounding board and above all else, a central point for interacting with this securities services community which epitomises global unity at a time when the concept is needed more than any other during our lifetime. We also wish you the best of health through this period. And when this is all over we hope to see you all at one of our packed-out Global Custodian awards dinners in the second half of the year, it’ll be Jonathan Watkins a celebration like no other. At least that’s one mes- Editor sage I managed to rescue from my original letter. Global Custodian Spring 2020 globalcustodian.com 3
