There appear to be three avenues to take when writing an editor’s letter: shameless self-promotion, narcissistic ranting or a bold prediction written from the safety of a keyboard. Well, this one might just touch on all three of those motives. But fear not, this whole issue is jam-packed with some of the best and most informative content we’ve pro- duced, meaning that after this quick tale about how great Global Custodian has been, is, and will be, you’ll be treated to a deluge of in-depth content on trends in the securi- ties services industry. There’s your self-promotion, now for the rant. I joined Global Custodian just after its 26th birthday - hardly a milestone to celebrate - armed with a plan to modernise and revitalise the brand, and I’d like to think we’ve gone some way to accomplishing that mission. But at the same time, I remember looking further ahead and thinking that if I made it another four years as editor then I would make the 30th anniversary a year to remember. Well now it’s time to deliver. To do so, we need to look to the future and innovate ourselves, and that doesn’t just mean using augmented reality in our print magazines – something we really are doing next year – but also highlighting how the industry will change moving forward, not just looking back over the past 30 years as we’ve done on previous anniversaries. Therefore, in our big reveal of 2019, we will be identifying 30 individuals who will shape the future of securities services. Trust me, being included in this list will be quite a feat, and there will be a special edition and event to commemorate this announce- ment. The 30 deserving recipients will be picked following the conclusion of our extensive research which is already underway. That doesn’t mean we’ll be completely overlooking those who have already played a huge part in the rich history of this magazine, as we’ll be inducting 30 new legends from around the world into our hall of fame throughout 2019. On the topic of events, we plan to make our awards evenings bigger than ever next year, with our flagship London and New York events getting the black-tie treatment with more entertainment, more recognitions and [hopefully] more attendees than ever before. In addition, we will have more single-day events and on-the-ground country specials, in addition to the hugely popular GC Forum which was introduced in 2018. Our ever-growing team will also continue to grow our digital, print and hedge fund focus throughout the year. During 2019, there will be celebrations across the world as we endeavour to live up to our global namesake, so no matter which of the 100-plus countries we deliver to you reside in, we hope you can join us in as many of the festivities as possible. If you buy into the message on our cover story this issue that the next 12 months will be the most relaxed regulatory period in 10 years, then you’ll have plenty of time to do so. There’s your bold prediction to complete the editorial trifecta, leaving nothing else to add but to thank you for being a reader of Global Custodian, whether this is your 30th year or you’ll be joining us from now into the future.
