Make it Right Debating league update You have all been extremely busy trying to Make it Right for children around the world. Lower Secondary motion: Space tourism is worth the risk As the deadline of Friday 6 March approaches, your video and written submissions should be in the final stages of completion. However, the action and impact you have made on the communities you have chosen to help should be ongoing. There were several arguments that could be explored in this debate: safety, cost, pollution to name just a few. Several teams talked about the human desire to push boundaries and explore the world (and universe) around us. Did people feel similarly about air travel 100 years ago as many do today about space tourism? Is it just a matter of time before it becomes part of everyday life, and something that the next generation will take for granted? Here are a few examples of what has been happening so far – a lot more will follow next month… The British International School Bratislava, Miss Jardine Congratulations once again to King Khaled’s Minions, our winners of Round 2! Also performing very strongly were Madinat Mavericks and Hong Kong 1. The most improved teams from Round 1 were Elite Cake Walkers from Champittet and Bratislava Winners. Upper Secondary motion: Volunteer tourists do more harm than good This motion provoked quite a lot of passion, especially from students who had personal experience of volunteer projects abroad. The crux of this debate came down to the definition of ‘voluntourism’. Those arguing against the motion wanted a broad definition that included volunteers working abroad, while those arguing for the motion wanted to focus on the profit-making tourism industry. It is the tension between the expectations and desires of the paying tourist and the genuine needs of the volunteer destination (for example, the village, orphanage, landscape) that makes this such an interesting debate. The British International School, Charlotte LOWER SECONDARY The British International School Houston , Mr Franklin Position UPPER SECONDARY BISH Bulldogs are pulling ahead with a huge score of 44 out of 50 in Round 2, congratulations!
