Heavy Duty Market

After some slow years in the heavy-duty segment, there has been some positive signs towards growth. Sales of new pickups has grown 14.8 percent in 2017 from 2016 figures and 18.3 percent in 2016 from 2015 figures. The sale of new trucks grew by 4.3 percent in 2017. Heavy duty trucks with over 16 tons control the market with 82.6 percent. Three brands – Mercedes Benz, Scania, Volvo – control almost 86 percent of the market. Since the average age of trucks is high and the Finnish economy looks now positive in the construction, forest and food industry, the market for heavy trucks looks good and cargo transport companies are planning to renew equipment.

Automated testing in heady duty vehicles has become important along with other automated vehicle projects. Truck and bus platooning is becoming an increasingly important. Finnish authorities were partners in the European Truck Platooning Challenge in 2018. An ongoing project is the Living Lab Bus, which is built around electric buses designed, developed and manufactured in Finland, which acts as a development platform for automated buses http://livinglabbus.fi/
