Best Prospects for U.S. Exports

Aftermarket Market

As leasing has become increasingly popular, the traditionally strong Danish market for aftermarket products has declined a bit. This trend is expected to continue as more consumers choose leasing-based or subscription-based ownership models. There are however still many older vehicles in Denmark that need aftermarket parts and American products are generally reviewed well, as they are generally competitive on both price and quality.

Electric Drive Vehicles Market

The Danish government has set out an ambitious goal of banning the sale of new cars with internal combustion engines by 2030 and hopes to have 500,000 electric and hybrid cars on the roads by then. This is quite ambitious when considering that Danes own around 3,000,000 million cars today, of which more than 99 % use internal combustion engines. To achieve this goal, the government has ambitions to remove the registration fee on electrical and plug-in hybrid cars under DKK 400,000 (USD 60,975) in 2019 and 2020. The proposed framework furthermore aims to make the first DKK 40,000 (USD 6,097) taxation free in 2019. The amount is set to increase to DKK 77,500 (USD 11,814) in 2020 . If the government can succeed in creating a framework that can support these ambitious goals, there will be great market opportunities for U.S. exporters in Denmark as it relates to electric vehicles.

Heavy Duty and Commercial Vehicles Market

Most of these types of vehicles are leased and this number has been increasing from 66% of commercial vehicles being leased in 2015 to 73% in 2017. In 2016, 5000 trucks were sold. This part of the market is dominated by European manufacturers such as Volvo Scania and MAN.

Specialty Equipment Market

It is legal to customize vehicles in Denmark; however, there are many legal requirements that must be considered. The requirements are related to pollution and carbon dioxide emission and noise created by the cars. The vehicle must not emit more than it did as a newly-produced car.

Used and Remanufactured Market

In Denmark, used cars are traded at a high frequency. During 2016 and 2017 used cars were traded on average more than three times the number of new cars. In 2016, 852,008 used cars were sold.
