For a small country, Slovenia has a significant and expanding automotive industry. The industry accounts for 21 percent of the country’s exports, and 80 percent of what is produced by the industry is exported. Major customers include Audi, BMW, Citroen, Daimler, DAAF, Deutz, Ford, GM, Iveco, Jaguar, John Deere, MAN, Nissan, Opel, Peugeot, Renault, Saab, Škoda, Toyota, VW, Volvo, BNP, Remy, Continental, Johnson Controls, Perkins, Bosch, Brose, Magna, TRW, Valeo, Grammer, Faurecia, Denso, and Aisin.

There are approximately 1.5 million registered motor vehicles in a country with a population of about two million. The average passenger vehicle is about 7 years old and the average distance driven per vehicle is approximately 11,000 kilometers.

There are no trade restrictions on imports of vehicles and automotive components from the United States. Slovenia entered the European Union on May 1, 2004, and adopted the EU’s common external tariff rates. Imports from European countries, therefore, can be made duty free. Imports from the U.S., however, are subject to potential duties.

Hybrid and electrical vehicles have shown significant growth in the past few years. Diesel motors are also extremely popular with almost 50% of passenger and 95% of commercial vehicles having a diesel engine.
