Electric Vehicles Market
U.S. firm Energy & Environmental Economics (E3) has been advising Oman in its plan to introduce electric vehicles and the government entity, Authority for Electricity Regulation (AER) is planning to issue the regulatory framework covering various options related to the rollout of a country-wide charging infrastructure for electric vehicles (EVs).Implementation dates have not yet been made public.
Heavy Duty Market
The heavy-duty vehicles market in Oman at this point is quite sluggish and companies are trying to operate with their existing fleets. Sources at auto dealerships attributed the decline to austerity measures imposed at the government and corporate levels with regards to spending. Commercial vehicles are mainly used in the construction sector, transportation and mining in Oman, where investments are driven primarily by the government.
Specialty Equipment Market
Modifying vehicles with additional fittings, modifying the bumpers, decorations and accessories, roof covers, light covers and stickers is strictly prohibited and is permitted only during national celebrations as per the specifications prescribed by the Royal Omani Police (ROP). The import of such vehicles is not allowed unless the consignee volunteers to remove such decorations.
Used Market Summary
There is a huge demand from buyers in Oman for used vehicles, especially cars from neighboring places such as Dubai. The U.S.-Oman FTA has also encouraged tariff-free imports of vehicles and spare parts directly through online sites in the US.
However in recent years, the Royal Omani Police has tightened import restrictions for used vehicles. The import of private vehicles exceeding seven years from the date of manufacturing and buses exceeding ten years and equipment exceeding fifteen years is prohibited. Importation of only left-hand drive vehicles is allowed in the country.
