Aftermarket Summary

Mozambican buyers are very price sensitive which largely reduces aftermarket opportunities. Although, this trend is expected to gradually change as disposable income rises.

Heavy Duty Market

Heavy duty vehicles are defined vehicles with Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) exceeding 8,500 lbs/3,800 kg. The heavy-duty segment used to be dominated by second-hand, U.S.-made vehicles. Due to a ban on left-hand drive systems in 2015, U.S. brands have been shut out of this market segment. The right-hand drive Japanese, Indian and European brands are now dominant players.

Specialty Equipment Market

Restrictions on modification of vehicles are in place. It is illegal to modify the engine of the vehicle. Most modifications are limited to paint jobs and detailing. Commercial vehicles must follow strict guidelines specified by the National Institute for Road Traffic (INAV).

Used Market Summary

Most vehicles sold are used. The used market applies to both commercial and passenger segments. Even though the Government recently increased import taxes for vehicle more than five years old, it is expected that the used market segment will continue to dominate sales.

Left hand drive vehicles have been banned in Mozambique since 2015, severely affecting the trucking industry that imported almost exclusively from the U.S.

Mozambique is a major point of entry for land locked countries, thus large number of used cars that enter Mozambican ports are destined to other countries, mainly Zimbabwe and Zambia.
