independent service providers/workshops are also present throughout the island. These service providers can also buy original accessories from local agents.

Electric Vehicles Market

In the 2016-2017 budget, the Government of Mauritius abolished import duties on electric cars of up to 180 kW and lowered duties on hybrid cars by 30 percentage points. The number of electric drive vehicles, mainly cars, has been increasing steadily over the past few years. Between 2009 and 2018, the number of imported hybrid cars increased from 43 to 3587. Reconditioned cars accounted for 95% of imports in 2018.

Heavy Duty Market

The heavy-duty fleet consisted of 1,366 heavy motor cars, 15,505 lorries and trucks, 3,351 tractors and dumpers, 947 prime movers, 1,999 trailers and 110 road rollers. The demand for heavy duty vehicles has been increasing steadily over the past decade. Both second hand and new heavy duty vehicles are sought in the market. Detailed data on the brands of this category of vehicles is not available.

Specialty Equipment Market

The National Transport Authority has indicated that in certain circumstances, it is permissible to customize a vehicle with prior approval from an engineer of the Ministry of Public Infrastructure and Land Transport. The Road Traffic (Construction and Use of Vehicles) Regulations 2010 provides the different requirements for the designs of vehicles that are allowed in Mauritius.

Used and Remanufactured Market

In 2018, 33% of vehicles that joined the fleet were imported second hand vehicles. While the number of used imported vehicles registered per year has considerably increased (from 4,406 in 2011 to 9,209 in 2018), many Mauritians prefer to buy new vehicles. In fact, many civil servants of a certain salary level benefit from duty free cars every 7 years and hence use this provision to acquire new cars for personal use.
