Christ: Life, Death,
and Resurrection
T
he University of San Diego’s Hoehn
Family Galleries is proud to partner with
The British Museum to present Christ:
Life, Death and Resurrection.
The exhibit will feature 41 original drawings and prints
by Italian Renaissance artists, including Michelangelo’s
The Three Crosses, which depicts Christ on the cross
between two thieves. It’s one of the few large-scale,
fully finished drawings by the Italian Renaissance
painter and sculptor to survive to present time.
Open from Sept. 13, 2019, to Dec. 13, 2019,
the exhibition will present scenes of the Nativity,
Crucifixion and Resurrection in a wide variety of works
— from woodcuts and etchings, to drawings in chalk
and ink.
It’s the first time these works will be seen in Southern
California and promises to be one of the most critically
valued exhibits in the history of our region.
“The exhibition provides a once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity for this community to study works
by some of the most important artists of the
Renaissance,” says Derrick Cartwright, USD’s Director
of University Galleries. “All who visit will experience
something special and memorable.”
The exhibit was curated by Hugo Chapman, the
Keeper of Prints and Drawings at The British
Museum and one of the world’s leading authorities on
Michelangelo’s drawings.
Visitors will see these works of art in an intimate
setting and students will have the privilege of studying
them extensively through a special course on the
Italian Renaissance and lessons by art and history
professors and those teaching theology and religious
studies.
The exhibit also paves the way for USD to explore
offering a new degree so students could one day
earn a Master of Arts in Curatorial Studies degree,
which will prepare them for positions in museums and
galleries across the country and around the world.

Presenting Art That Fills the
Heart and Feeds the Soul
as Galerías de la Familia Hoehn de la Universidad de San
Diego, en asociación con El Museo Británico, tiene el orgullo
de presentar: Cristo: vida, muerte y resurrección.
La exhibición contará con 41 dibujos e impresiones originales de artistas
italianos renacentistas, entre los cuales se encuentra Las tres cruces de
Miguel Ángel, donde aparece Cristo entre los dos ladrones. Es uno de los
pocos dibujos a gran escala perteneciente al pintor y escultor renacentista
que ha sobrevivido hasta el tiempo presente.
Abierta desde el 13 de septiembre hasta el 13 de diciembre, la exhibición
cuenta con escenas de la natividad, la crucifixión y la resurrección
presentadas en una amplia gama de trabajos, desde tallas en madera y
grabados a dibujos en tiza y tinta.
Es la primera vez que estos trabajos serán vistos en el sur de California y
promete ser una de las exhibiciones más valoradas dentro de la historia
de nuestra región.
“La exhibición le ofrece a nuestra comunidad la oportunidad única de
estudiar los trabajos de los más importantes artistas del renacimiento”
comenta Derrick Cartwright, director de las Galerías de la Universidad
de San Diego. “Todos los que vengan a la exhibición van a experimentar
algo especial e inolvidable”.
El curador de la exhibición fue Hugo Chapman, quien también es el
conservador de las impresiones y dibujos del Museo Británico y una de
las autoridades mundiales en dibujos de Miguel Ángel.
Los visitantes podrán ver los trabajos de arte dentro de un ambiente íntimo
y los estudiantes tendrán el privilegio de poder estudiarlos profundamente
a través de un curso especial de renacimiento italiano y de clases a
cargo de profesores de arte y de historia y también de quienes enseñan
teología y estudios religiosos.
La exhibición también le abre camino a la USD para explorar la
posibilidad de ofrecer un nuevo título para que los alumnos puedan
acceder a una Maestría en Curaduría de Arte, que los va a preparar para
trabajar en museos y galerías del país y del mundo.
