MENTAL ACUITY
J
BY ANGELI CA GAVALDON
ust like our bodies age, our brain does too. There are so many physical exercises
we can do to maintain our bodies strong and in shape, but we forget about our
mind which is just as important. There are many things we can do to slow down
the deterioration process and even help prevent dementia.
Here are a few tips to keep our focus and memory sharp:
Diet
Add a variety of foods high
on vitamins minerals and anti-
oxidants. Spinach, blueberries,
walnuts, eggs, Omega 3 are all
important for our brain.
Exercise Your Brain
Just like our muscles our
brain needs to be challenged
in order for it to be in top
shape. Reading, learning
a new language, doing
crossword puzzles, holding
the glass and fork with your
left hand instead of your right
or vice versa, all make our
brain stronger. Our mind gets
used to doing things a certain
way so try and change it up.
Maybe you always take a right
turn when you walk, take a
different route, be creative.

Exercise
Exercise also helps you improve
your memory and keep your
brain sharp. When we exercise,
blood flows to our brain better.
More blood flow means more
oxygen to our brain.
Socializing
Maintaining friends and having face to face contact with them
has proven to keep your brain healthy by training our brains
and keeping social motivation. Keeping your brain active helps
prevent neurodegenerative disease. Also, if you participate in
activities with friends that are healthy, it motivates you to keep
the same healthy habits.
